Organised Firework Displays - A Great Choice!

We hadn't intended to go to a firework display this year. We'd talked about taking our daughter to Ottery St. Mary to see the rather terrifying flaming tar barrels but decided against it.  I've not been for years and years and then I used to go without my parents.  I can only think that they didn't have a clue what was going on, or really, really (foolishly) trusted how sensible I was at the time. However, we had a phone call from my daughter's friend on Friday evening asking whether we knew of any local fireworks.  Our own Round Table group used to do a magnificent display in town but got fed up of people watching from outside the field and not contributing towards costs. We had a quick Google and found there was a display about 7 miles out of town in Dunkeswell. "Oh good" says my daughter's friend "can I come with you?"!!

Thanks to her we decided that we would go along. My sister and her husband said they'd like to go too, so our merry little band set off.  The site of the display was a small airfield and goodness does the wind blow up there! The two pre-teens, of course, had completely ignored advice to dress warmly and instructions not to moan if they got cold!

We were absolutely delighted to find that the entrance fee was donations only. So often we're put off going to local displays because of the fees, and people do tend to watch outside, as our local Round Table found out - perhaps this is the way to go?  People were certainly donating, and paper money at that.  The evening was put on by Dunkeswell Village Hall Management Committee and food, hot punch and other goodies were provided by Dunkeswell Preschool Group.

A massive fire was lit at 7.30pm. The cordoned off area was actually quite close to the fire but fortunately the wind kept blowing in the correct direction away from the crowd! We were so close that even an hour after we'd left I could feel which cheek had been facing the fire as it was degrees hotter than the other cheek!  8pm saw the firework display start.  It really was lovely.  Not a huge and professional set of timed fireworks like many displays; all of these were hand lit but still lots of opportunity for "oo's" and "ahhhh's".  All in all a good AND SAFE evening was had by all and our thanks go out to the Committee and Preschool....and my daughter's friend for being so cheeky!
